Waterfall History

Growing up in Sioux Falls, I didn’t think very much about it’s origin.  I always thought that Sioux Falls was named for the gorgeous waterfall located on the Sioux River that runs through the city. I have since learned that to be incorrect.  The city is named for the Sioux Tribe of American Indians as well as the waterfalls on the Big Sioux River which it’s history revolves around.  I also discovered the the river itself is named after the Lakota people.

Early history reveals that Tribes of the Lakota and Dakota arrived in the 18th century and used the falls to rendezvous with French fur trappers. Lewis and Clark also described the falls in their journal. In the mid 1850’s, a town was organized near the falls, fueled by the economic potential of the Sioux Falls waterfall.  In August of 1862, the town was abandoned due to fear of violence from the local Native Americans.  Raiders burned the buildings and destroyed everything.

Three years later, Fort Dakota was established to assure the resettlement of the city. In 1873, the water power of the falls was harnessed which encouraged settlement.  Sioux Falls was incorporated as a town in 1877 and as a city in 1889. Northern European immigrants were attracted to the area because it resembled their homeland.

I have been coming to the falls since I was a young child.  I loved to scramble around on the rocks and explore the area in my youth, and it’s been fun to watch my son enjoy it as much as I do! It’s a beautiful place to visit and has different personalities depending on the season and the rainfall. The Sioux Falls are a ‘must see’ when you visit Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Karen Introduces New Artwork for 2016 Holiday Tour

Photographer Karen Ruby at her display

Today, Karen Ruby announced the beginning of her annual tour for showcasing her photography and artwork. During her tour of art and craft shows across the Midwest and Northern Plains of the United States, Karen will be introducing new photography and art pieces that reflects her grandparent’s life in the early 1900’s while living in the brakes of the North Dakota Badlands. Karen’s photography will be made available for purchase at the shows she attends. Her new art pieces are exclusive to the shows and will not be made available for online purchase or showing until the end of the holiday tour. The Badlands of South Dakota

I don’t frequently travel to the other end of the state, and when I do, am usually limited on time.  Recently, however, I took time to spend a few days in the Badlands to explore, hike and discover the myriad of landscapes that she offers.  It’s amazing how much the area can differ! Depending on the time of day, the area, the aspect from which you are viewing…it varies greatly!  If you ever have the chance, I highly suggest that you explore this area.  It is worth taking the time to do so!  Here are a few images from my last trip.

Commercial Job

Things are looking great for my photography business!  I’m pleased as we just finished our taxes, and we are definitely growing as more and more people see my artwork.

Also, a received an order for a commercial job with Gil Haugen Construction, here in Sioux Falls.  They are in the process of an office remodel, and are decorating with local photographer’s artwork.  I was pleased that they requested 3 of my prints, on watercolor, or giclee.  Basically, this is art paper vs. photo paper.  It has a very nice look to it.  The following are the images they chose:

Grand Tetons

I’ve finally worked on some of my photography from our trip last year to the Tetons.  I find the park to be an inspiring place.  I enjoyed the serenity of the mornings when I woke up at 5 am to be out the door of our camper by 5:20 so that I could get to the place of the day before the sun peeked over the horizon.  Logan joined me one morning and loved it, but then had to take a nap later and opted NOT to join me again!  If you’ve never been there, go!  It’s beautiful and there are many places to hike and enjoy scenic views.

Black Swallowtails in South Dakota

Last year, my son and I raised some Monarch butterflies, but were unable to do so this year since they were very scarce!  I understand that with the late spring and cold start of our summer, they just didn’t thrive as they should have.  However, we planted some parsley and dill in the hopes of attracting some swallowtail butterflies.  It was wonderful to find about 13 eggs on our dill.  We brought them in and watched them quickly grow from a tiny thing to a large caterpillar, who then sheds 2 layers of skin to form its chrysalis.  They emerged about a week later and all but 3 survived!  Here is my documentation of this wonderful experience!

‘Majestic Falls’ Installed as a Wall Mural

I received a phone call from the owner of Cliff Hangers Gallery, who sells the metallic version of ‘Majestic Falls’, to let me know that a graphic design company was inquiring into purchasing the rights to my image for a wall mural.  Of course, I was thrilled and promptly called the contact he gave me.  We negotiated a deal, and it has been installed at Beck and Hofer Construction in Sioux Falls!

Sertoma Butterfly House in Sioux Falls

My son Logan and I have been volunteering at the Sertoma Butterfly House since the beginning of the year!  We’ve learned so much and enjoy the delight (and sometimes fear) on visitor’s faces!  Of course, we both usually bring our camera as well to attempt to capture the beauty of these elusive and beautiful insects!  Here is what looks like a mirror image of some Longwing Butterflies.  Let me know what you think!
